Happy Meal's "Disneyland 70th" Mobile Game
I was the 3D art lead and level designer for this program. My main responsibility was leading the creative team on building four lands inspired from the Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park and defining the 3D look of the program.
. . .
Below are the video demos showcasing the different lands. In the game, you navigate a player to explore the land and find the ornaments that contain the characters from that land!
One of the goals for this program was keeping the 2D toon look of the doodly-drawn characters that were designed by the Toy team. I drew some concept art drawings in Photoshop with lasso tool to test a flat vector look on possible directions for the lands. With each concept art, I was able to understand how to prioritize level of detail for the environments that meet mobile performance.
There, I found great ideas to apply to early 3D renders, with the Sleeping Beauty Castle renders being pitched as the main test. Below, you can see various renders that showcase stages of development.
Below are the overview renders of the lands. We incorporated 2D cards to mimic lighting effects in our scene to reduce the need for physically-based lighting. Alexia Lino, Associate Art Director, created the 2D-style skyboxes for the levels!
Making custom textures for every asset is expensive for mobile so texture atlases were utilized where objects are UV mapped to different colors/gradients. Based on how we uv-mapped, we were able to create stylized lighting on the diffuse texture. Below are texture atlases used for 'Sleeping Beauty Castle' level and 'Avengers Campus' level.
Below are a couple of 3D assets that I have created. I created a toon material that adds a pearly shiny look to the ornaments!
For the characters, I decided to use the same characters that I have created from Lil Mcd program and modeled winter attire inspired from McD's seasonal apparel such as the fry scarf, McD's mini backpack, and HM shirt. I also made different hairstyles for the characters to highlight more of their personalities. Clara Chou, one of the 3D artists on the team, created the Sorcerer's hat, Minnie's Bow, and Mickey Ears Hat!
